This time of year is so busy, and we can easily forget that people in other parts of the world may celebrate the holidays differently.  The homeschool support group I belong to does a “Holidays Around the World” day each December, where each child picks a different country and puts together a short presentation about how people from that country celebrate.  The European countries are always the most popular countries, but some of the more interesting include Australia and Mexico.  Of course, Australia is in the southern hemisphere so their seasons are opposite ours.  It’s fun to look at pictures of Santa surfing in Australia!  Last year we learned some really interesting things about how the holidays are celebrated in Mexico, too, and the importance of poinsettias in their holiday traditions.  It’s a wonderful idea to bring together different cultures by having each child in the group “teach” everyone else about the country they’ve chosen.  Happy Holidays!
